SLEMCO warning customers of energy bill scams
Some SLEMCO customers have received calls or emails that are not from the company, warning them their electricity will be turned off for non-payment. Customers report being told during a phone call that they have to buy a pre-paid debit card to avoid disconnection or in an email that they have to pay $524.30 to avoid interruption of service. The scam artists also call the bill an “energy” bill and not a SLEMCO bill.
“SLEMCO bills all customers through regular US Postal Service mail,” warns SLEMCO Communications Manager Mary Laurent. “Our company name is clearly marked on each bill, as is the amount of electricity you used and our phone number. The layout and style of our bills has not changed, so if you receive something that looks suspicious, be proactive. If you have any question whether or not your SLEMCO bill is legitimate, please contact us at 337-896-5200 before making your payment.”
Laurent also said customers who are signed up for online bill payment will get an email telling you your bill is ready and what the amount is, but you would have to have signed up for that service.
