Reverend Dr. Henry L. Maze
Reverend Dr. Henry L. Maze, Pastor of Mount Triumph Baptist Church, departed this life on February 7, 2014 at his home in Abbeville, La.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Mount Triumph Baptist Church located at 310 South Lamar Street in Abbeville, La. Rev. Walter August will officiate.
Born in Abbeville, LA., he was the son of the late Garfield Maze, Sr. and Elvira Captiville Joiner. He attended school In Vermilion Parish and honorably served in the United States Army. He was the one of the first African-Americans to serve as a Deputy with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office. He accepted Christ at an early age and faithfully served as a member and deacon at Macedonia Baptist Church in Abbeville, La. He answered the call to the ministry and was ordained by Rev. Joseph Fields in 1973. Pastor Maze received a Doctorate of Theology at the United Theological Seminary in Monroe, Louisiana. He organized the St. Matthew Baptist Church in Gueydan, La. and served as pastor of St. Mark Baptist Church in Cade, La., and Mount Olive Baptist Church in Freetown, La. At the time of death, he was senior pastor of Mount Triumph Baptist Church in Abbeville, La., where he has faithfully served since 1981. Pastor Maze was a great example of a godly and humble man. He had a passion to win souls into the kingdom. Pastor Maze desired the best for all and gave himself unselfishly to everyone in time of need. Under his leadership, the Mount Triumph Baptist Church became a beacon of hope, comfort, and refuge for the lost, and a training ground for the perfecting of the saints.
Pastor Maze was known for his faithful service throughout the greater Acadiana area. He was a member of the Board for Christian Villa Nursing Home in Crowley, La., and a member of the American Legion. He was a candidate for City Marshall for the City of Abbeville in 1972. Pastor Maze was affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, USA Incorporated and faithfully supported and attended local, state and national conferences until his health began to fail.
Pastor Maze was happily married to his beloved Mary Louise Gage. Unto this union was born three children, Carmen, Rhonda and Roena.
Treasured memories will remain with his children: Henry Lawrence (Terah) Maze, Jr. of Abbeville, La.; Carmen (Louis) Nunez of Houston, TX; Rhonda Maze of Abbeville, La.; and Theresa M. (Destry) Harrison of Youngsville, La.: eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Gage Maze, his parents, Garfield Maze, Sr. and Elvira Captiville Joiner, one daughter Roena Katrell Maze, four brothers, Cuba, Ambrose, Robert, and Garfield Maze, Jr.; six sisters, Evirgia Woods Wright, Louise Guidry, Lourella Lange, Ida B. Levine, Velma Maze and Clara Fredrick.
