Delcambre krewe holds Mardi Gras ball
This past Saturday, Delcambre’s Krewe of Mystical Waters celebrated their 15th year of krewe history through a performance of the “the greatest show on earth” – Under the Big Top: Barras and Blakely Circus.
The celebration was held at the Hotel Acadiana in Lafayette.
Reigning over this year’s festivities were Krewe de Mystical Waters’ King XIII Michael Blakely and Queen XIII Ginger Barras.
Michael is a native of Lafayette but has been a resident of Delcambre for 31 years.
Michael has been an employee of HB Rentals for 12 years and presently serves as regional operations Manager.
The 2014 Krewe de Mystical Waters’ Queen XIII is Ginger Leleux Barras.
Ginger is a lifelong resident of Delcambre, and has been married to Anthony “Tony” Barras for 29 years. Ginger and Tony have one daughter Keisha, and Ginger is “Gigi” to her two beautiful grandbabies, Suri and Jett Romero.
Professionally, Ginger is the owner/director of Academy of Acadiana based in New Iberia.
Serving as ringmaster for the night, King Michael performed daring feats of taming Big Cats, “clowned” around with circus Zanies, joined the Queen in performing a disappearing magic act and brought the show to a close by toasting his loyal and royal subjects who have contributed to making the past 15 years successful as well as memorable, his queen whose creativity and hard work brought tonight’s circus to life and his family for their love and support.
Queen Ginger entered the ballroom in character as the “ Elephant Trainer ” using her bull hook to guide a life-sized elephant into the arena to entertain the crowd.
Opening the show was an action packed number, including stilt walkers and clowns riding unicycles, that gave the audience a glimpse of the colorful circus troupers who would be filling the evening with silly circus fun as well as the beautiful costumes and characters that etch circus memories in a child’s mind that last long into adulthood.
The character clown policeman, popcorn lady and trinket seller brought the opening number to a close by encouraging the audience to “put their hands together” and let the fun begin ………..and begin it did…………Cats in cages being tamed by the Ringmaster King, clowns “shaking their tail feathers”, French Poodles and a circus puppeteer, beautiful circus horses, a rag doll and magic act were all part of the night’s unforgettable events. The performance even brought a touch of “old school” to the Big Top as clowns did a circus rendition of “Soul Man”, “Car Wash” and Double Dutch Bus.”
