Kaplan’s Davis signs with Grambling St. University
Kaplan Pirates Devonte Davis has done something early yesterday morning that most high school football players only dream of, signing a national letter of intent with a university.
Davis, as of yesterday morning, is now a proud member of the Grambling State University football team.
“I’m very excited,” Davis said. “It feels great to know that I can play at the next level. I have worked so hard and am finally being rewarded with a scholarship so that I can go and do what I have to do at the next level.”
Davis will join the proud tradition that is Grambling Tigers Football.
“I chose Grambling because of the atmosphere,” Davis said. “The coaches are great and it just feels like home.”
Along with Davis, his coach Stephen Lotief was able to share in the experience with Davis.
“He did an awesome job, he is just awesome,” Pirates Head Coach Stephen Lotief said. “He (Davis) is the first guy that I have ever had the privilege of sitting next to during signing. I think it’s great and his best football is ahead of him.”
Along with being proud of Davis, Lotief knows what got him there.
“His hard work and determination,” Lotief said. “He is going to be a good player because of those things, and he is just a good athlete.”
This day was also made special because along with being able to enjoy the day with his coach, Davis was also able to enjoy this day with his mother.
“Words can’t even explain how proud of him I am,” Davis’ mom Karen Evans said. “He has worked very hard, and played with injuries, and none of that mattered. He just did what he has to do and I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
This was also a big day for Kaplan.
As everyone was waiting for the festivities to begin, the coaches were overheard talking about the last time a Kaplan football player had been signed.
No one could come up with a definitive answer.
Devonte Davis is now placed in a very special group of people that few get to be a part of.
He is part of the select group of athletes that are talented enough and have worked hard enough to be recruited by a college or university.
Davis’ name is held in high regard around the Kaplan campus, and now he gives everyone else on the football team something to strive for.
