Abbeville police busy catching burglars in the act
It is not too often a black and white police unit will drive up to a location and see a crime taking place, but that is what occurred in Abbeville this week.
A black and white unit in Abbeville was patrolling the streets of Abbeville when it came upon two separate burglaries taking place within two hours of each other in the same neighborhood.
The first stop occurred when officers stopped Roy Harris Jr. who was on Prairie Avenue, at the intersection of Donald Frederick Boulevard in Abbeville. The officers stopped Harris who was riding his bike without a headlamp. The officers called in the stop and learned Harris had a warrant for simple burglary from December of 2013. The warrant was issued on Jan. 9, 2014.
The officers also found Harrison in possession of items stolen from a burglary.
He was booked into the parish jail on a simple burglary warrant. His bond was set at $30,000. He was also issued a citation for not having a headlamp on his bike.
Less than two hours later, officers noticed a person pulling on door handles to vehicles on the 100 block of Donald Frederick Boulevard. They watched the subject looking inside vehicles and they attempted to confront the subject, who then fled on foot.
The officers gave chase for three blocks and he was eventually tackled under a carport on the 200 block of North Myrtle Street.
The person arrested was Andrew Granger of 519 Elias Street in Abbeville. The police have reported that Granger apparently threw a gun under a vehicle at the residence where he was captured.
Granger was charged with attempted burglary, resisting an officer, illegal carrying a weapon, carrying a firearm in a firearm-free zone. He also had warrants out in Breaux Bridge. His bond is $13,000 for all of the charges.
The Abbeville police urge citizens to report any suspicious activity they see. A complaint can be filed with the police at 893-2511.
