Vermilion Parish deals with icy, cold conditions

Vermilion Parish did not see any snow, but there were plenty of icy conditions throughout the parish which came with headaches for some.
There were just over seven accidents in Vermilion Parish on Friday.
Drivers leaving Abbeville had a challenging time crossing the bridge over La. 14 Bypass because of the ice on the bridge.
Vermilion Parish school officials decided Thursday at 2 p.m. not to have school on Friday because of icy conditions forecasted. Well, early Friday morning the roads were icy, which would have created havoc for bus drivers and parents bringing their children to school.
“I want to thank Becky Broussard at OEP for assisting in monitoring the weather conditions and providing updates throughout the day,” said School Superintendent Jerome Puyau. “These updates helped us make an early and accurate decision to close school Friday.”
Puyau learned Friday morning the rain would stick around throughout the day Friday. After hearing that, he contacted high school principals to let them know to cancel all Friday night basketball games or practice.
Some games were rescheduled to be played Saturday, while others will play Monday.
School will be open on Monday. The heating system at each school stayed on Friday and a staff member from the school walked inside and outside the schools monitoring the pipes to make sure they did not break.
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office were busy Friday morning handling at least seven accidents throughout the parish. According to Sheriff Mike Couvillon, no one was seriously injured in six morning accidents.
No roads were closed in the parish because of the icy conditions.
In Abbeville, the electricity stayed on, keeping everyone warm.
Parts of the courthouse were closed, but the city hall office in Abbeville remained open.
All government buildings are expected to be open Monday.
