Vermilion Parish authorities trying to catch group of dogs

There is a gang problem in Abbeville and parish authorities have put getting rid of the gang their number one priority for 2014.
The gang problem Abbeville has is not human related, instead, it is dog related.
For the last three months, the Vermilion Parish Rabies and Control Department have been in search for a pack of dogs that have been roaming certain neighborhoods near the Abbeville Library and behind Sonic Drive Inn.
The Sheffields are a married couple who have been living on East Street for 50 years. Shirley is 78 years old and last week she watched from inside her house as a gang of dogs jumped up and down at her glass patio door.
“It was scary. I was not worried about being attacked because I was in my house,” said Shirley. “Today, I am worried about going outside. Before the dogs arrived, I was outside 15 minutes earlier. What would have happened if I would have been outside?”
Billy Noegal, who is in charge of the rabies and control, said he is aware of the dog problem in those neighborhoods.
“Catching those dogs has been our number one priority,” said Noegal. “We have been dealing with them for two and half months.
Noegal said the rabies and control department has placed traps in yards with food in the trap hoping to lure the dogs into the trap. It is not working, he said. He said the dogs are not hungry because someone is feeding them. “They are neighborhood dogs.”
No one claims ownership of them, however, he added. The dogs range in size. There are red, brown and black colored dogs.
“I don’t know what to do,” she said. “I normally see the pack of dogs cutting through my yard. This time they came to my patio door and created a mess.
Sheffield said she and her husband have talked about moving out of the neighborhood because of the dog problem. “We don’t want to because this is home. “
