Mother Nature could not cool-off a hot VC team

Mother Nature could not even slow the Vermilion Catholic Screamin’ Eagles down this past Friday night.
The temperature, at the end of the game, was 43 degrees, but it was not enough to cool off a hot team.
The Eagles (12-0) scored 49 first-half points and cruised to a 56-19 triumph over St. Mary Tigers in the quarterfinal round of the Division IV playoffs.
With it being the coldest game of the year, VC’s offense managed to churn out 514 yards of offense. They had 183 yards rushing and 331 yards through the air.
VC senior quarterback Brennan Gallet said the cold weather did not bother his throwing motion.
“At the beginning of the game you did not feel the temperature because you were always moving around,” said Gallet, who was 15 of 19 passing for 331 yards and three touchdowns. “It was not that cold until we came out for the second half and that is when I began to feel the cold weather.”
By the second half, the game was over.
But in the first half, it was a game for a little while.
Leading 7-0, Gallet hit a streaking Emile Trahan down the right side of the field for a 66-yard TD pass. Trahan nailed the extra to give VC a convincing 14-0 lead.
“We saw the play before that, the safety was cheating towards Connor Menard’s side a lot,” Gallet added. “We figured if we throw to Emile, Emile could beat his guy. There was no guy on the top, so it was wide open for us.”
Trahan said, “It was a great read by Brennan. He read the defense.”
Trahan had a career night with six receptions for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He became the number one receiver because Menard was nursing a hurt foot. Menard still had two catches for 28 yards.
Tyler Derouen also had a career night with four receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown.
Leading the VC ground-game was Mike Campbell with four touchdowns, 139 yards on 10 carries. He had TD runs of 12, 9 , 48, and 1 yard.
VC will be at home Friday for the semifinal round of the playoffs. Cedar Creek will visit VC for the second straight year.
