Sister Mary Cyril Landry, O.Carm

Sister Cyril Landry, retired teacher, nurse and Sister of Mount Carmel, died Friday, October 3, 2008, at Jennings American Legion Hospital, Jenninings.  She was 87 years old, and in the 65th year of her religious profession.

 Sister Cyril was born Joyce Mary Landry on March 14, 1921, in Kessler, LA to Superville Joseph Landry of Brusly, Oliver, LA (Assumption Parish) and Evella Marie Simoneaux of Brusly, St. Vincent, LA (Assumption Parish). 

She entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feb. 5, 1941, and received the habit of the Sisters of Mount Carmel on Aug. 5, 1941.  On Aug. 3, 1943, she made her first profession, and pronounced perpetual vows Aug. 2, 1946.

 After graduating from Belle Rose High School in Belle Rose, Sister Cyril received a bachelor of science degree in education from Loyola University in New Orleans and devoted 24 years to the ministry of education.  She taught at St. James Major, St. Augustine and St. Dominic in New Orleans, Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Westwego, St. Ann in Carencro, St. Joseph in Rayne, St. Elizabeth in Paincourtville, and Mount Carmel in New Iberia. 

In 1953, Sister Cyril graduated  from Our Lady of the Lake School of Nursing in Baton Rouge and was assigned to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Thibodaux.  She also practiced nursing at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse Infirmary and home health services;  she visited the sick during her stay at St. James Major, the Motherhouse in New Orleans, LA and in Rayne.

 1n 1990-1991 she received the “Nun of the Year” award from the Auxiliary Ladies of Knights of Columbus in Baton Rouge.  After Hurricane Katrina Sister Cyril moved to the Golden Age of Welsh, Welsh, LA.

 Sister Cyril, the thirteenth of fourteen children was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Maggie Landry, Camilla Landry Carbo, Hilda Landry Dahmer, Odette Landry, Sophie Landry Patriquin, Rose Mae Landry and Mabel Landry Griffin and her brothers: Goldman, Rudolph, Edmond, Solomon, Alexander and Stephen Landry.  She is survived by nieces and nephews.

 Visitation was held at Jacob Schoen Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with Rosary at 11:30 a.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial followed at 1 p.m. in the chapel.

Internment followed at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.
