Elvenia “Mina” Istre

A funeral mass was held Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Matthews & Son Funeral Home in Gueydan honoring the life of Elvina Istre, nee Elvina Hanks, 90, who died Thursday, September 18, 2008. She was born in Morse, to Willie and Mathalie Sonnier Hanks.

A rosary was recited on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Burial was in the Gueydan Cemetery with Father Mitchell Guidry officiating the services.

Mrs. Istre was a loving wife and mother. She was devoted to her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was a life member of the St. Peter Ladies Altar Society.

She also loved to sew and garden. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by five sons, Kerney Istre, Jr and wife, Vickie, of Morse, Michael Istre and wife, Pat, of Abbeville, Luke Istre and wife, Janet, Norbert Istre and wife, Marilyn, and Bruno Istre all of Gueydan; her grandchildren, Shawn Istre and wife, Benita, Melanie Prejean and husband, Mitch, Katie Istre and fiancee Marcus Scanlan, Trevor Istre and Kinsey Istre; three great grandchildren, Brennan and Roman Prejean, and Benjamin Scanlon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kerney Istre, Sr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Hanks; and two brothers, Alvin and Gilbert Hanks.

Pallbearers were her five sons, Kerney Jr., Michael , Luke, Norbert , and Bruno Istre, and grandson Shawn Istre. Honorary pallbearer was Brennan Prejean.

Visitation was held Friday, September 19, from 3:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. and again on Saturday, September 20 from 8 8 a.m. until time of service.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Acadiana for their dedication and caring.
