Seventh Ward Elementary in Vermilion celebrates "A" grade
Vermilion Parish elementary school performance grades released last week by the state Department of Education range from an “A” to as low as a “D.”
The four elementary schools in the parish with the highest grades are all in the rural areas of the parish.
For the first time in years, the two elementary schools south of Abbeville can brag as being the top elementary schools in the parish based on their performance grades.
Grabbing the top grade in the elementary school is Seventh Ward Elementary with a school report card an “A” with a score of 103.2.
Seventh Ward Elementary had 91 percent of its students pass last year’s school performance test. The school had 56 percent of its student score Basic, 27 percent Mastery and 8 percent had Advanced - way above the state average.
Seventh Ward Elementary Principal Priscilla Cormier learned what the school score was when she received word from a former principal friend who had seen the scores on-line before she did.
“I ran to the computer to check,” said Cormier. “I was so excited. The teachers and parents worked hard.”
The school celebrated its A grade on Friday.
Right behind Seventh Ward is its neighbor - Forked Island/E. Broussard Elementary School with a score of 97.3 with as “B” grade.
The school had 79 percent of its students score Basic or better. Six percent scored Advanced, while 21 percent scored Mastery.
Going north, Meaux Elementary is a “B” school despite 85 percent of its students scoring Basic or above, including a parish-high 9 percent scoring Advanced.
The other rural school with a high mark is Indian Bayou Elementary with a 95.9 or “B” grade.
Indian Bayou had 85 percent of its students score Basic or better on its testing.
