Abbeville Rotary Club honors Michael Luquette as Vermilion Parish’s 2013 Farmer of the Year

Michael Luquette bleeds farming because he was born into it.
His father’s family were rice farmers and his mother’s family were sugarcane farmers. He spent his summers working the rice fields and his falls helping to harvest sugar cane.
Today, at the age of 49, Luquette helps farm 3,700 acres of sugarcane near Erath.
Luquette was named the 2013 Rotary Club Farmer of the Year on Wednesday.
“All I wanted to do was farm and I’m happy because that is what I am doing today,” said Luquette to the Rotarians.
Luquette, a 1982 AHS graduate, started working with his uncles on their sugarcane farm. Luquette, along with his cousin, Ross Morgan and co-worker Robert Moss began investing in the farm.
By 2007 they bought out Mike’s uncles’ share in the farm and had formed what is now known as Morgan Farmers Inc.
Today, he has 30 head of cattle and also raises heifers for his daughters to show in 4-H.
He is married to the former Dana Broussard of Forked Island and they have three daughters, Chelsie, Haley and Sydney.
