Magnificent sculptures of Fred Daspit
GUEYDAN - Legally blind as a result of macular degeneration, Art and Architecture professor, Dr. Fred Daspit’s insight for art can only be called magnificent.
The artist was recently the honored guest at a reception held at the Gueydan Museum featuring his seven years of unique wood sculptures.
Each sculpture is made with hundreds of pieces of wood, many of the pieces being scrap that has been discarded. To many pieces to count, they are formed, fused and finally coated with chemicals that replicates the look of weathered metal.
Each sculpture has its own story, reflecting the style and period of its initial inspiration, some of which coming to Daspit in his dreams.
Upon closer examination of the sculptors you will notice an emblem embossed (wax seal) in various places on each piece, most of them blending with the art and tricking the eye to think it is part of the art.
Daspit’s motto for his life and his work can be found on his signet ring he purchased in London in 1970. “The motto, ‘Nothing is achieved without effort,’reflects my philosophy,” says Daspit.
Daspit’s art can be seen at the Gueydan Museum on Wednesday - Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5. p.m.
