Veterans from throughout Acadiana will be honored Saturday at airport
Veterans across Acadiana will be honored this Saturday at a special event in Abbeville called A Salute to Our Heroes. Its purpose is to honor, celebrate, and educate veterans and their families.
The event will include activities for the whole family, including a 5K run called Double Time for Troops; live music from the Victory Belles, Horace Trahan and the Ossun Express, and country musician Dustin Sonnier; jambalaya and other concessions; a KidZone featuring fun jumps, snowcones, and face-painting; and free tours of the Louisiana Military Hall of Fame and Museum including its WWII-era planes Stearman Model 75 and T-6 Texan.
Guest speakers include Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran Sergeant Chris Sullivan (RET) and Unites States Senator David Vitter.
There will be displays from
organizations that will educate veterans and their families on how to improve their quality of life. These organizations include: American Legion, Hero Hunts, Wounded War Heroes, Wings of Courage Flight School, the Marine Corps League, and the Louisiana National Guard.
The first 250 veterans and their immediate family members will receive complimentary lunch.
The event is the Eagle Scout Service Project of Emile Hebert, an Abbeville Boy Scout.
Double Time for Troops 5K begins at 8:00 a,m. Opening Ceremonies begin at 10:30 am. Music, food, displays, and the KidZone will happen between 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
All veterans and the general public are invited to come out to the Louisiana Military Hall of Fame and Museum on the grounds of the Chris Crusta Memorial Airport, 112 Industrial Park in Abbeville to enjoy the activities.
