Vermilion Sheriff’s Department responds to call of toddler found unresponsive in swimming pool

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon at approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon Sheriff Deputies responded to a call of a 23-month-old girl that was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a residence located on Theodore Road in Erath.
Sheriff Couvillon says that information gathered by investigators at the scene indicate that the young girl appeared to have exited the residence through a rear door and climbed into an above ground swimming pool before she was found.
The caretaker immediately began performing CPR on the child until relieved by first responders from Erath and Iberia Fire Departments, and Acadian Ambulance paramedics. The young girl was flown by Acadian Ambulance Air-Med to Women's and Children's Hospital in Lafayette where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and the exact cause of death is unknown at this time pending an Autopsy.
Sheriff Couvillon says that this is a very sad and tragic accident and that the name of the young girl is being withheld at this time at the request of the family.
