VC Lady Eagles rally for a victory

The No. 9 Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles woke up in the sixth inning and scored nine runs en route to a 10-4 win over Oberlin in the first round of the Class A playoffs.
With the win, they are on the road Thursday to meet St. Mary High School, from Natchitoches.
The Lady Eagles were down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. For five innings, VC had left eight on base after getting seven hits. They had opportunities but could not deliver timely hits until the bottom of the sixth inning.
With one out, the Lady Eagles exploded for nine runs on eight hits. There were two big hits that scored six of those nine runs.
VC’s Haley Faulk and Kelsey Michel got the big inning started with two singles. They would eventually score to make it a 4-3 game with one out.
With Lexi Langlinais and Leah Camel on the corners, Caroline David ripped a 2-RBI double to give in two runs and put VC ahead. Bella Doucet continued the explosion with an RBI-double, scoring Lexi Richard, who was a runner for David.
Alli Broussard followed with a single and then Taylor Abshire was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Ahead 6-4, Michel was back at the plate for the second time in the bottom of the sixth inning. She hit a bases-loaded home run over the left field fence to score four runs and give VC the cushion 10-4 lead.
VC head coach Kim Guidry said rallying in one inning is nothing new for the Lady Eagles. They have been doing it all year long.
“It’s perseverance,” said Guidry. “We loaded the bases. We just could not bring them in. Eventually it was going to go our way.”
Guidry said being down 4-1 after five innings, she never saw panic in the dugout because there was still two innings left to play.
“The first one to win could be the hardest one, especially when you are expected to win. Like I said, there is a lot that can be said about perseverance,” said Guidry.
Michel finished the game with two hits and she scored twice.
Faulk and Alli Broussard each had three hits. Doucet, David and Camel had two hits.
Pitcher Taylor Abshire got the victory on the hill for VC.
