Blue, Gold and Prisoner of War markers will be on display
Unveiling of memorial markers Monday in Abbeville
The Abbeville Garden Club will be placing Blue Star Memorial Markers at three different locations on Monday.
The ceremonies will be held at three different locations in Abbeville, from 10 a.m. to noon.
At 9 a.m. there will be a special ceremony at Graceland Cemetery to unveil a prisoner of war marker (near the American Flag).
The first ceremony is taking place at the Vermilion Parish War Memorial on Concord Street (downtown Abbeville).
A gold star memorial marker and a prisoner of war memorial marker will be dedicated at the war memorial.
From there, everyone will travel to the Louisiana Hall of Fame and Military Museum located at the airport. A byway Blue Star Marker will be dedicated in front of the museum.
Then, everyone will be travel to the Louisiana National Guard Armory, near the airport, and a special byway Blue Star will be dedicated near the armory.
A marker will be placed near La. 14, entering Abbeville from Erath.
The Blue Star Memorial Program honors all men and women that served in the United States Armed Services.
This program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945 the National Council of State Garden Club adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway System that covers thousands of miles across the United States. A large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was designed and is placed at appropriate locations along the way.
