Two Vermilion pitchers throw no hitters on same day
On Monday, between the hours of 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., a historical athletic event happened in Vermilion Parish.
Four pitchers on two different teams combined to throw no-hitters on the same day.
The first no-hitter took place in Kaplan in the first round of the Class 3A softball playoffs.
The Lady Pirates of Kaplan took on Thomas Jefferson High School and cruised to a 13-0 win in five innings.
Pitching four out of the five innings was junior Abby Trahan. She retired 11 of the 12 batters she faced. The only Thomas Jefferson player to get on first base was because of an error.
While on the mound, none of her teammates informed her she was on her way to throwing her fourth no-hitter in her high-school career. She was also not aware of it.
“I don’t pay attention to that,” said Trahan. “I did not find out until someone told me after the game.”
Trahan said it’s best she does not know she had a no-hitter taking place. If she found out during the game, then it would jinx her, she added.
Keeping the no-hitter in place in relief was teammate Lindsey Schexnailder. Schexnailder pitched the final three batters and retired all three with less than 10 pitches.
When that no hitter was done, across the parish in Erath, another one was about to start.
The Erath Bobcats played a double-header game against West St. Mary. Erath won the first one 12-2 and then came back and smoked West St. Mary 18-0 in five innings.
On the mound for Erath in the second game was sophomore Andre Touchet. Touchet had never thrown a no-hitter in his life, so the thought of throwing one Monday never entered his mind until the game was over.
He pitched four innings, walked two and struck out an amazing 12 batters. Luke Young pitched the final inning and retired the final three batters.
“I was aware I had a no-hitter going, but I tried not to think about it,” said Touchet. “It was never brought up until after the game.”
Touchet said he “had his stuff” on the mound Monday night. Both his curve and fast ball were working to perfection.
“My teammates behind me were making plays on defense,” he added.
After two innings, Erath led 3-0. Then they blew it open with 11 runs in the third inning. Touchet said having a comfortable lead helped him relax on the mound.
Touchet improved to 5-1 on the mound. The Bobcats played North Vermilion on Tuesday.
