Three Abbeville workers escape injuries after truck flips
Three Abbeville workers escaped injuries after the city truck they were in flipped upside down due to a shift in weight caused by the hauling of a mini- excavator late Wednesday.
For the last month the city has been installing utilities in Plantation Ridge, a new subdivision in the northern part Abbeville on Jane Street.
The city workers were leaving the subdivision around 6:30 p.m. Three workers in a Ford one-ton truck went east on Jane Street. They were hauling a trailer that was loaded with a mini-excavator.
Less than 100 yards down Jane Street, the back end of the trailer began to sway. The driver of the truck felt the swaying and applied his brakes. When the brakes were applied, the trailer jack knifed, causing the truck to overturn. The truck stopped in a ditch next to a sugar cane field.
The air bags inside the truck deployed.
The three men, who were wearing seat belts, crawled out of the truck. They also refused medical help from Acadian Ambulance and were back on the job Thursday morning.
Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said the excavator was fastened on the trailer correctly and no one was given a ticket by the police.
“It could have been a lot worse,” said Piazza.
