Selling alcohol after 2 a.m about to stop in Abbeville
The Abbeville City Council took the first steps into changing an ordinance that lets stores sell alcohol between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
The city council requested city attorney Ike Funderburk to look through the city ordinances in hopes of finding outdated ones.
At a recent committee meeting, Funerburk went over city ordinances that could be taken off the books. The city council had to first agree to do so.
The city had an ordinance that at the age of 65, you had to retire as a city employee despite your health. Although, today, the law is not enforced because of federal age discrimination laws that prevents forcing someone from retiring at a certain age.
The city council took that ordinance off the books.
One ordinance change that will affect residents today is getting rid of the ordinance that allows you to purchase alcohol at stores between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. seven days a week.
Today, bars in Abbeville close at 2 a.m. Drinking can continue because it is not against the law to walk into a 24-hour grocery store and buy alcohol. That is about to change.
A new ordinance first has to be created, approved by committee, published in the Abbeville Meridional, get public comment and then approved at a city council meeting.
The process will take six to eight weeks before it becomes law.
