Rain does not slow down Abbeville's Daylily Festival

Rain did not slow down or stop the 13th Annual Daylily Festival from being a success.
By 7:30 a.m. Saturday, the line of people was formed around the outside walls of Magdalen Square in Abbeville. By 8:30 a.m., they were all in Magdalen Square in search of the perfect, colored daylily.
According to Abbeville Main Street Manager Charlene Beckett, despite the threat of rain, people came to the festival.
“It was the most disastrous, yet most successful Daylily Festival,” said Beckett on Monday. “It rained off and on but people still came and bought.”
Many booth owners had to move their location in Magdalen Square because the ground was so wet after a downpour.
Despite the wet stuff, venders who had a table full of daylily plants sold out quickly.
A pleasant surprise the Daylily Festival received was 45 people who were on a charted bus from Ville Platte’s Council on Aging. The visitors arrived at 10 a.m. and did not leave Abbeville until 2 p.m.
Beckett said they walked around the Square and other parts of downtown Abbeville. Many also ate in Abbeville restaurants .
“It was a great thing to see,” Beckett said. “I was worried Friday (about the festival) because of the weather. But it turned out to be a great festival.”
Abbeville Garden Club and Lafayette Master Gardeners provided an Information booth at the Daylily Festival in Abbeville, on May 31, 2014, which concentrated on Louisiana Super Plants and general concerns for Louisiana Gardeners. This was part of the National Garden Week activities for Abbeville Garden Club.
The Daylily Festival was presented by Abbeville Main Street and Vermilion Chamber of Commerce. Sponsors included the Abbeville Garden Club, Lafayette Master Gardeners, City of Abbeville and Gulf Coast Bank.
Abbeville Garden Club is a member of National Garden Clubs, Deep South Region, and Louisiana Garden Club Federation, District III.
