Power outage to take place Sunday morning in Abbeville

A planned city-wide power outage will occur in Abbeville this Sunday, Jan. 25 at 6 a.m.
The outage is part of a process to transfer power to a new transformer at the Walter “Pete” Noel Substation. The substation is located near Abbeville High School and is the city’s main power source.
Public Works Director Clay Menard made the announcement during Tuesday’s regular city council meeting.
“We are ready to start transferring the load from the old transformer to the new one,” Menard informed the council.
The city’s electrical consultant Harvey Dubois and the city crew will prep the transformer beginning around 5:30 a.m.
“They will be ready to pull the switch at 6 a.m.,” Menard said. “It’s a time where not much should be impacted, expect for a few of the businesses.”
Menard could not give an exact estimate as to how long the outage will last.
“We are hoping for a short period of time, “Menard told the council.
The city conducted a similar process last April.
“The outage was for a few minutes,” Menard said. “Everything was ready. We can’t anticipate problems. If everything goes as planned, it will be a short outage.”
