Pelican Pointe residents in Maurice are moving back Wednesday morning

MAURICE - At around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, residents and staff began making their way back to Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Maurice.
The Department of Environmental and Quality gave the approval Wednesday morning to let the patients and staff return to Pelican Pointe.
The staff and volunteers began hauling back mattresses from Amana Christian Fellowship around 8:30 a.m. Family members, who brought their loved ones home, were also contacted Wednesday morning to inform them of the good news.
Late Tuesday afternoon, the State Fire Marshal checked the air quality and gave the OK for residents to move back.
But, Pelican Pointe took an extra precaution Tuesday and hired a private company to monitor the air for 12 hours.
For the last two days, contractors moved vents in the attic and put some vents to blow outside.
To describe what happened with the ventilation system, Maurice Fire Chief Matthew Trahan used the analogy of lighting a fire place, then closing the flue. The smoke could not get out, so it would drift back down into the home, instead of escaping.
Residents have been out of Pelican Pointe since Sunday afternoon. They were moved after residents complained of throat irritation.
Early Friday night, residents and staff were evacuated after carbon monoxide was discovered in the air at Pelican Pointe. It was discovered a dryer was leaking carbon monoxide in the laundry room.
Friday and Saturday’s problems are not related.
