Mouton gets 40 years for carjacking

Terrance Mouton will serve 40 years in prison for his role in a 2012 Abbeville carjacking.
A state district judge sentenced Mouton to four 10-year sentences on Monday. The sentences, which call for hard labor, will run consecutively. Mouton pleaded no contest to one carjacking charge and did the same to three charges of second-degree kidnapping.
Mouton originally pleaded not guilty, but changed his plea to no contest prior to the sentencing.
Mouton has no possibility of parole.
Abbeville police arrested Mouton on Feb. 5, 2012, after they say he stole a truck with three children, ages 11, 10 and 9, inside from the Valero gas station on the La. 14 Bypass.
Mouton reportedly sped away from Valero with the three children still inside the vehicle, running a nearby red light on his way to U.S. Hwy. 167. Mouton then headed north toward Maurice. Mouton crashed the vehicle, including hitting a tree, about a mile north of the intersection of 167 and the Bypass.
The three children suffered moderate injuries, including one being left with two broken legs.
An Abbeville officer arriving on the scene found Mouton, who escaped serious injuries, attempting to get into a SUV after that driver stopped to check on the scene. Mouton allegedly tried to get the driver of that vehicle to take him to Maurice. The officer arrested Mouton at the scene.
The entire incident started after police reported to a domestic violence call in the 800 block of North East Street in Abbeville.
Terrance Mouton was accused of several acts of domestic battery on his wife. When police arrived, they say Mouton fled on foot to the Valero Gas Station after resisting officers.
The judge on Monday gave Mouton credit for time served and he has two years to appeal the sentences.
