Man wearing ‘Scream’ mask robs store in Abbeville

The Abbeville Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that took place Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred Tuesday shortly after 6 p.m. at the Dollar General Store on Charity Street near John Hardy Drive.
The unknown suspect, described to police as a black male, between 5-8 and 5-10, entered the store armed with firearm. The man covered his face with a mask similar to the one seen in the “Scream” horror movies. He also wore a black-hooded jacket, overalls with a reflective stripe and white tennis shoes.
“He ordered the cashier to give him money,” Lt. David Hardy of the APD said Wednesday morning.
The suspect, who was in the store for less than a minute, left with a undisclosed amount of money. The store did have customers shopping at the time but Hardy said no injuries were reported.
The suspect left the store and fled west on Charity Street. Hardy said all possible leads are been taken.
“Right now we are looking at all available video footage from the area,” Hardy said. “He was wearing gloves so that eliminates some of the things we can do.”
Hardy is asking that anyone who may have been in the area and has any information that can help in the case to call the Abbeville Police at 893-2511.
“Anyone who may have been in the area between 6 and 6:30 p.m. may have seen someone fitting his description,” Hardy said. “If so, please call us.”
Such has been the case in areas around Acadiana, robberies like Tuesday's spike during the holidays.
“These kinds of things are always a concern during this time of year,” Hardy said.
