LeBouef is 2014 Cattle Festival ‘Cattleman of the Year’
Lorraine LeBouef has been named the 2014 Cattle Festival Cattleman of the Year.
She will be among the honorees at Thursday evening’s Honoree Social and Banquet. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Magdalen Place.
According to the Louisiana Cattle Festival Association, this marks the first time in history that the Cattleman of the Year award will be presented to a woman. But because of her dedication to young people and the beef industry, it is without reservation that the Louisiana Cattle Festival Association will name her Cattleman of the Year for 2014.
Lorraine grew up on a farm in the Indian Bayou area where her father raised cattle and grew rice. She is married to Calvin LeBouef and they live on a 3rd generation farm in Perry.
Lorraine works as a secretary for a local oil contracting company. She helps manage a pure bred Red Brahman herd, which originated from the Diamond J. Ranch. A few of their Brahman calves have been exhibited in the Parish and on the Open show circuit. A large part of the operation consists of F1 BrahmanXHereford cross cows using quality Braford bulls.
She has been an ardent supporter of the cattle industry and beef youth projects on the parish and state level. Lorraine has been a member of the Vermilion Parish Cattlewomen Association for 30 years. She has served as President, Secretary and Treasurer. She has always played an active role in raising money for the Scholarship Program that is awarded to qualified students in the Parish. She has served as President-Elect of Louisiana Cattlewomen Association for 5 years and has been a member for 25 years. She has organized a Queen’s reception at the Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association convention for 6 years and is chairman and a member of the prestigious Spur Club. The requirements for being nominated as a Spur Club member are: promote beef on a local and state level, educate youth and consumers on where beef comes from, and lots of hard work and dedication to the Beef Industry.
Lorraine has worked in the Cattlemen’s Kitchen at the Louisiana State Fair in Shreveport for many years. While working in the kitchen, volunteers serve rib-eye dinners, hamburgers and beef stew with all the trimmings to the public and to the exhibitors for the livestock show that is going on at the same time.
She has volunteered at many parish 4-H events: Achievement Day, Beef Appreciation Day, Beef Poster Contest and the 4-H Foundation Clay Shoot. She also volunteered on the state level with the Louisiana Beef Ambassador Program. Lorraine has won numerous Beef Cook- Off awards and has even prepared a meal for Baxter Black and his son at her house after Hurricane Rita. She has been a member of the Louisiana Cattle Festival for 30 years, serving on several committees. She is also a current member of the Vermilion Parish Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.
