Keith Calvert returns to Erath as assistant football coach

ERATH — Keith Calvert is no stranger to Vermilion Parish, especially Erath.
In his 28 years in education, nine of them were in Vermilion Parish.
Plus, his wife is a 1981 Erath High graduate.
Last week the Vermilion Parish School Board approved the hiring of Calvert as a teacher/coach at Erath High School.
In football, the 50-year-old Calvert will be the defensive coordinator at EHS. He will also assist in track and field.
Calvert spent the last eight years at Lafayette High School where he was the defensive coordinator at the Class 5A school. He was also the boys head track coach.
His first coaching job was as assistant at Abbeville High from 1988 to 1991. He left AHS for Crowley from 1991 to 1996. He departed and went to Jennings as an assistant from 1997 to 1999. He spent a half a season at Plaquemine High before being named the head football coach at Kaplan High in 2000.
He stayed there two years but then returned to Abbeville High under then head coach Brent Indest. Calvert stayed at AHS for five years, three years as an assistant and two years as a head coach.
After five years at AHS, he went north and accepted a job at Lafayette High School.
“I had good years at Lafayette High,” said Calvert. “I wanted to down size and get back to a small-town feel, with people who care about athletics and who support their school. I wanted to get back and enjoy the small-town atmosphere.”
Calvert said he was familiar with the town of Erath’s love for athletics because he saw it when he coached at Kaplan and Abbeville High.
He did not waste any time getting involved in the Erath’s football program. Calvert joins Erath assistant coaches Eric LeBlanc and Jonathan Bouillion each morning for summer workouts.
As for what defense the Bobcats will be in this football season, Calvert said that is determined by the personnel on the football field.
Calvert is married to Monica Granger Calvert, a 1981 Erath High graduate. They have two daughters, including one who will be a senior at Lafayette High this school year.
