Kaplan mayor talks about the 2013 year

As the book gets ready to close on 2013, Kaplan Mayor Kirk Champagne gave thought to the many accomplishments and challenges the city faced throughout the year.
“Its exciting to be a part of the progress of our city,” said Champagne. “It is a very rewarding experience when residents share their ideas and concerns with me and we can discuss it. And, I thank the people for this.”
The following is a list of accomplishments made in the city throughout the year.
•Began implementing a new SCADA (computerized) system at the water plant.
•Continued a city-wide flushing program for water system..
•Continued a city-wide ditch and culvert cleaning program.
•Changed the filter media at the water plant at a cost of $64,490 to assure quality drinking water.
•Repaired numerous sidewalks in town.
•Applied for and was awarded $308,000 for Down Town Enhancement Phase I.
•Began the process for an $850,000 grant from the state for upgrades to the Trahan Sewer Pumping Station.
•Applied for $90,000 for 8th Street drainage and repairs.
•Began installing a Polymer Injection System at the water plant
•Prepared the utilities for the new apartment complex on S. Guidry.
•Acquired plans in hand for the newTrahan pump station.
•Received a $308,000 grant for downtown enhancement.
•Spending $90,000 on utility relocation for the new bridge on Highway 35 South.
•Applied for a walking trail in Kaplan parks.
•Purchased a new sewer camera.
•Began work on the new Wilkins Stroud Court House.
“As mayor of this city,” Champagne said, “I feel we are working hard on economic and community development, so we will have a prosperous city.
