Very few of us will leave a historical mark in our lifetime. But that is not the case for Pam Gaspard.
Gaspard, died Thursday after a lengthy illness. She was 65.
In 2002, after serving as former Abbeville Mayor Brady Broussard’s secretary for years, Gaspard decided she wanted to run for political office.
She won a seat on the Abbeville City Council in District A and served one four year term, from 2002 to 2006.
It was the first time a woman had served on the Abbeville City Council.
She served with former city councilmen Francis Touchet, Corbett Duhon, Norman Broussard and Carlton Campbell.
It was also Mark Piazza’s first term as the mayor of Abbeville.
“Pam was an extremely pleasant person with a great sense of humor,” said Piazza. “She served the community and its citizens with energy and enthusiasm. She will be missed by all.”
Touchet, who is still on the city council, remembers serving with Gaspard.
“She served with dedication and integrity and will be sadly missed by the entire Abbeville Community,” said Touchet. “I truly enjoyed our time serving together on the city council. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and the entire family.”
Long-time friend and parish clerk of court Diane Meaux Broussard said Gaspard was her mentor.
“Pam served our community for many years with her infectious smile,” said Broussard. “She loved Abbeville and was very proud to be the first city council woman.”
Abbeville City Councilman Brady Broussard Jr. has known Gaspard for a long time.
“I had the opportunity to know Pam well from our time together with an oil field service company. Pam was a dynamic person with a remarkable personality and a smile for everyone,” said Broussard “It was an easy choice for my father to offer her the mayor’s secretary position. Pam was a huge success in that position which lead to her election to the Abbeville City Council. The first woman to serve on the council was only one of the many things she accomplished in her productive life. I’m saddened by her loss but relieved her suffering is over.”
Funeral arrangements had not been made as press time.
