Fire destroys Kaplan home - family desperate for help
A Kaplan family lost everything in a fire at the home they were renting at 606 East Second Street in Kaplan last week.
According to Kaplan Fire Chief Jacob Mathiew, the department received a call at 8:02 p.m. on May 4. Assisting the Kaplan Fire Department were the Meaux-Nunex and Leleux Fire Departments.
Because neighbors alerted the occupants of smoke coming from their home, Robert and Lisa Hughes, along with their daughter Lexi, were able to escape with no injuries.
The fire was believed to have been started with the hot water tank in the home.
Due to the total loss, the family is in desperate need of clothing and donations. The sizes are as follows: man’s size large in shirts; pants-32x30, and shoe size is 11. Woman’s size is XL in shirts; 14 pants and 71/2-8 shoe size. Child size is 7-8 in shirts; 6-7 in pants and 1 in shoe size.
A monetary donation fund has been set up at Iberia Bank under Lisa Huges Fire Fund. They are currently staying in a motel. The owner of the rental property paid for one night and Red Cross pays for only three nights. After that, the family has no where to turn to.
If you want to donate items, please call Deanna Broussard at 652-1110 or drop the items at 909 Hebert in Kaplan.
