Erath's Coy LeBlanc trying to make name for himself in loaded backfield

ERATH - When you are the third running back in a loaded backfield that has a returning 1,000 yard rusher and a 1,000 yard passer, the chances of you touching the football looks bleak. That is not the case, however, for Erath High sophomore Coy LeBlanc.
LeBlanc is expected to share running duties with junior Elijah Mitchell, who has rushed back-to-back 1,000 yards, and running back Scott Moore.
Then there is quarterback Ben LeBlanc, who is a two-year starter and has thrown for 1,000 yards the last two seasons.
So, where does LeBlanc fit in? Erath head coach David Comeaux said wherever the coaches put him, he will do well.
“We have two pretty good running backs in front of Coy, but he can step in and rotate anytime,” said Comeaux.
Coy, 15, has prepared himself mentally and physically for the upcoming season. He has breakaway speed and runs the 40-meter dash in 4.6.
Physically, he has added 20 pounds onto his frame and now weighs 165 pounds.
“It is muscle, not fat,” said Coy. “I feel a lot stronger now than I did when school ended. I don’t think the extra weight will affect my running.”
Comeaux said if his team is losing and running out of time in the game, look for the Bobcats go to a spread offense. Moore and Mitchell will spread and become wide receivers. Coy steps into the back field as the lone running back.
Coy is also the backup free safety. Mason Granger, a sophomore, is the returning free safety from a year ago. Granger is also the second string quarterback. If Coy gets hurt, Granger becomes the starting quarterback and Coy is the starting free safety.
‘Coy has everything,” said Comeaux. “He has good speed. He has good vision. He has incredible quickness. It is just all natural to him. At the same time, he is a tough, tough kid. That is why we like him so much.”
Coy made a name for himself last year as a freshmen. The coaches were so impressed with him, they started him as the junior varsity tailback. He also played special teams on the varsity level.
“He did a lot for us last year, and he keeps getting better,” said Comeaux.
