Erath aldermen can not afford to replace small bridge in town
ERATH - It does not look like the small, two-lane bridge on North Suire Street in Erath is getting fixed anytime soon.
The bridge was closed last year by the state because it was deemed unsafe due to its age. Because the bridge is in the city limits, the town of Erath is responsible for paying for the cost of replacing it.
Engineer Todd Vincent of Sellers and Associates informed the Erath Aldermen and Mayor Billy Cormier the cost of repairing the bridge on North Suire Street. The price the aldermen and mayor heard was not to their liking.
Vincent said he has two prices to repair the bridge, which is made out of a timber.
The price to make it another timber bridge, which has a life of 30 years, is $125,000.
The price to make the bridge a concrete bridge, which has a life of 50 years, is $250,000.
