Driver speeds through Abbeville, runs into police officer
A gold Honda Accord could have caused a lot more damage that it did had it not hit two vehicles traveling on South State Street in Abbeville.
Residents on Martin Luther King noticed the Accord, allegedly driven by Michael Ballard, traveling on the streets near Martin Luther King Drive at a high rate of speed.
It was estimated the car was going around 80 miles per hour and running stop signs.
The Honda was zipping west down Martin Luther King Drive. towards South State Street. For unknown reasons, Ballard did not stop at the intersection of MLK and South State Street. There were two cars stopped on MLK ready to cross South State Street. Ballard went around the two stopped vehicles.
Traveling north on South State Street was Abbeville Police Detective Leland Laseter and another vehicle was heading south.
The Accord crossed onto South State Street and the driver of the Acadian Contractor truck hit the back passenger side of the Accord, and then Laseter’s truck hit the Accord again
Despite two trucks hitting the Accord, it get kept going and left the scene.
Laseter and the driver of the Acadian Contractor truck were not injured.
A motorist who saw the accident followed the Accord after it left the scene, A motorist followed the gold Accord where it came to stop at a home.
Laseter said he wanted to follow the Accord, but his truck was not able to move.
When the police arrived, Ballard was allegedly on the road in front of his house yelling, “Hit me, hit me. I want to die.”
Ballard was arrested. He was booked into Vermilion Parish jail and charged with unauthorized use of a movable, two counts hit and run, driving while intoxicated, no driver’s license, and running a stop sign. Ballard’s bond was set at $8,000.
