Catholic HIgh beats VC
NEW IBERIA - The Vermilion Catholic’s 14-game winning streak (dating back to last year) came to an end Friday night thanks to the Class 3A Catholic High Panthers.
Catholic High scored 21 points in the third period and cruised to a 42-14 victory in the season opener.
Catholic High used its ground game to get it done.
Catholic High quarterback Jason Pellerin had 98 yards rushing, along with teammate Seth Pierre, who also had 98 yards.
VC’s top rusher was Chris Campbell with 31 yards on eight carries.
Pellerin had a nine-yard TD run in the first period and a 3-yard TD run in the second period that put the Panthers up 14-0 at halftime.
Down 21-0, VC was able to get on the scoreboard when quarterback Hunter Frith completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Emile Trahan. Trahan kicked the PAT to make it a 21-7 game at the 8:24 mark in the third period.
First-time VC quarterback Hunter Frith had a great night in his debut. He was 19 of 39 passing for 219 yards, along with his three interceptions.
The Panthers exploded for three more touchdowns after VC scored.
VC scored again on Campbell’s 10-yard touchdown run with seven minutes to play in the game.
Trahan finished the night with nine catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Derouen had six catches for 86 yards. Payton Trahan had two catches for 15 yards. Chris Campbell (1-11) and William Noegel (1-8) each had a catch.
Catholic High had 365 yards of total offense, while VC had 277.
