Abbeville skate park taking shape at Comeaux Park
Contractors took advantage of this past weekend’s good weather to bring the Abbeville Skate Park a step closer to being operational.
Contractors poured the cement for the park on Saturday at A.A. Comeaux Park. Workers built the dirt foundation a few months ago and again built it up after a rain had caused some that foundation to wash out.
The project is a joint venture with the City of Abbeville, the Abbeville Rotary Club and the Vermilion Parish Police Jury. The Rotary Club held a fundraiser last March, one that raised more than $20,000. The City last year matched the Rotarians’ $20,000 and the Police Jury contributed $10,000.
Rob Roy, a Rotarian who also serves on the Abbeville Parks and Recreation Board, is helping spearhead the project. He said Monday afternoon that contractors have said the project is nearing completion.
“They told me that if the weather cooperates, they could be finished in the next two to three weeks,” Roy said. “I am going to meet with the guy on Friday and we will get a better estimate of when it will be completed.
“It is looking really good with what they have done so far.”
Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said when the project broke ground that it is a good thing for both the city and those who will utilize the park.
“We’ve been promising the kids in Abbeville an area where they could skateboard,” Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said last year. “We have had some issues in the past where skateboarders where prohibited in the downtown area. When the council made that decision, promises were made to provide an area to skateboard at the park.
“We’ve finally been able to budget it, and with the help of the other groups, we are able to make it happen.”
The Rotary Club of Abbeville would like to thank the following 2013 St Pat’s Comedy for a Cause Event Sponsors: Cajun Maritime; Abbeville Building & Loan
Eastridge Nursing Home; Dupuys’ Oyster Shop; Bank of Abbeville & Trust; Abbeville Electric; USB Financial; Planters Rice Mill and Glen Lege Construction.
