Abbeville Police arrested three after chase through city
A high-speed chase through Abbeville on Tuesday ended when a black Dodge Charger ran off the road and struck a culvert on Mike Street, near the Winn-Dixie parking lot, Abbeville Police said.
The chase began after officers responded to Felicity Street, near Schlesinger Street, at about 11:45 a.m. after a person called police, saying a man pulled a gun during an argument, the department said in a Facebook post. The witnesses said the man who allegedly pulled the gun jumped in a black Charger and sped away just before police arrived.
Officers spotted the car driving recklessly nearby and tried to get the driver to pull over, the department says. The driver refused and led police for about one mile before hitting the curb near the Winn-Dixie parking lot and blowing out two tires.
\Police arrested the three men inside the car - Darron Carter, 17, Gene Williams III, 18, and Kavan Broussard, 18 - who gave up without incident, the department says.
Investigators found drugs and a handgun they suspect had been thrown out of the vehicle during the chase, the department says. A city marshal working in that area where they drugs and gun were found told investigators the gun and drugs were not there before the Charger passed by.
Carter, of Abbeville, is the suspected driver and was booked into Vermilion Parish Jail on counts of aggravated flight from an officer, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of Schedule II crack cocaine, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance and obstruction of justice, the department says. Carter also had outstanding narcotics warrants through the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office.
Broussard and Williams, both of Abbeville, were passengers and were booked each on counts of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of Schedule II crack cocaine, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance and obstruction of justice.
