Abbeville High football coach apologizes to city and school
Monday morning second-year Abbeville High Head Football Coach Chris Towery apologized to Abbeville High and city for the way he acted during the homecoming game this past Friday.
“I apologize to the students, faculty, alumni and the people who were there to watch the Wildcats,” Towery said. “I should not have lost my cool as I did. I just got caught up at the moment.”
Towery was thrown out of the game by referees three minutes into the second half against the Port Barre Devils in a homecoming battle.
Minutes earlier, Towery was given a sideline warning for being too close to the sidelines while yelling at his offense. Towery questioned the official who threw the first yellow flag as to why he was not given a warning. During his questioning, Towery was given another yellow flag, and his team was assessed a penalty knocking them out of field goal range.
Not long after the second penalty, Towery continued to ask the referee why was he given the first penalty. He was hit with a third penalty by the same referee, which meant he had to be ejected from the game after the third yellow flag.
Because he was ejected, Towery has to watch an on-line video about anger management.
He will be able to coach for Abbeville’s next game Friday against Loreauville on the road.
