Abbeville fire department fights fire, helps stop speeder

Early Saturday morning, the Abbeville Fire Department was called to battle a fire at the 400 block of Park Avenue, across the street from Mt. Carmel Elementary. The house did not seem to be occupied at the time. While the fire was being fought, the police officers from other departments were in pursuit of a speeder who was traveling down Hwy. 167 at excessive speed.
The motorist, whose name has not been released, came into Abbeville, flew passed VC and then ran over a water hose that was connected to a water hydrant, according to a neighbor. The driver lost control and slammed into Glenn Mouton’s old brick building.
The driver escaped serious injuries, according to a resident who lived nearby. It was not known what charges were filed against the driver.
The house was completely destroyed. No one was in Mouton’s building at the time of the crash.
