29-year-old truck found in Vermilion River
After about 60 minutes of pulling it across the dock on Friday around 4:45 p.m., Truman Abshire's Wrecker Service managed to pull the old muddy truck out of the Vermilion River and onto the dock near the old Pub Bar in Abbeville.
After it was rinsed off by the Abbeville Fire Department, the truck is a 1986 white Chevy work truck either for electrical or plumbing. No license plate was found in the back of the truck. There was a bumper sticker on the back of the truck about fighting Louisiana litter.
There were still tools in the compartments in the truck.
It was not known how long the truck had been in the Vermilion River. It was found by a contractor who was making a dock in back of the old Pub. The truck was about six feet from the back of the old Pub and in the river. When the contractor found it, the bed was sticking straight up and the front was in the mud. The contractor picked it up and moved it on the side of the old Pub, which is now a house.
It was placed in a pile of mud. and no one called authorities to report the found truck.
Law enforcement was called after someone was passing on the La. 14 Bypass Bridge Friday and saw three tires sticking out of the mud near the old Pub. They called the Abbeville Police, who also called the Sheriff's Marine Unit.
After the truck was cleaned, the front of the truck looked like it had been wrecked. The roof of the truck was ripped apart along with the front engine. All four tires were still in tact.
There was no driver or passenger in the vehicle when it was found.
The police were told the truck was in the river for at least eight years and maybe longer. It was in 12 feet of water when the contractor found it
Both the Abbeville Police and Vermilion Parish Sheriff will look into the their files to see if there were any reported stolen Chevy utility trucks over the last 29 years.
If anyone had a 29-year-old Chevy truck stolen to contact the Sheriff's Department and report it.
