Abbeville Garden Club January Meeting

Abbeville Garden Club members gathered for their regular monthly meeting on Jan. 20. Susan Becker served as hostess of the event which featured 20 members in attendance. Guest speaker for the meeting was Mark Shirley, Coastal Area Marine Agent with the LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant College Program.

In keeping with the Louisiana Garden Club Federation’s theme of “Nature’s World Where Everything Belongs,” the subject of Shirley’s presentation was Alligator Conservation. He explained alligators are found in coastal Louisiana because of the state’s wetlands. Shirley stressed, “We need to keep our wetlands healthy to preserve wildlife, which includes alligators.”

The life cycle of alligators, Louisiana’s conservation efforts to protect alligators and the economic impact of alligators on the economy were important points discussed.

Club members went on to discuss upcoming activities. The Cleanest City Contest, sponsored by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, was the main agenda item. AGC members are volunteering to work with Keep Abbeville Beautiful to have a litter free environment. Judging for the contest takes place in early April.

The next Abbeville Garden Club meeting is scheduled for Feb. 17 at the home of Reba Broussard.   Anyone interested in joining AGC can contact Patsy Hebert at 337-937-6775 for more information.
