Kaplan parade has new route
KAPLAN - The Kaplan Chic-A-La-Pie parade has altered its Mardi Gras day parade route in Kaplan, eliminating the route on the West side of Cushing Boulevard. This comes to Mayor Linda Hardee’s attention just days before the parade was scheduled.
“I asked them to return the route to normal, but (parade organizers) said they were doing that because of security reasons,” Hardee said.
Chic-A-La-Pie parade chairperson Donna Whitworth said this year’s parade route was finalized a couple of weeks ago. “Some people are going to be confused, but once they see the barricades are moved to the other side, it won’t be as congested.” Because the West side will be closed, Whitworth said people will be able set up their lawn chairs and sit and stand in the road, but said they will still not be able to use the neutral ground.
The Kaplan parade route has traveled up the East side and down the West side of Cushing Boulevard since it was first started; however, minor alterations have occurred throughout the years.
Instead of circling the neighborhoods and traveling down the West side of Cushing, the parade will now end the same way it came -- down the East side of Cushing Boulevard.
Kaplan Police have stated that they will place barricades on the West side, and that no traffic will be allowed through during the parade, which begins at 2 p.m. Mardi Gras day (Feb. 24).
Judy Mire, managing editor of the Kaplan Herald said she is sure people will still gather on Cushing for the parade, but now those who want to watch the parade will all have to gather on the East side.
