VC starts title defense on right foot

The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles, coming off of winning the 2012-2013 State Championship, started its title defense off right against St. Edmund winning 57-21.

“It’s nice when you can get started with a win,” Lady Eagles Head Coach Kim Guidry said. “It was nice especially since the way we played during the Hall of Fame game and jamboree.”

The Lady Eagles started the game on an 18 to two run, and finished the first half up 34-8.

Leading the way for the Lady Eagles were Katie Frith and Ashailee Brailey.

Frith scored a team high 19 points, while Brailey was on her heels with 15.

Both Frith and Brailey did most of their work offensively in the first half.

Brailey scored all 15 of her points in the first half with nine coming in the first quarter alone.Frith scored 10 of her 19 in the first half.

“We just played well,” Guidry said. “We did make some mistakes and that’s to be expected, but now we have somewhere to go. We can always get better.”

The excitement level for this team is already at an all time high. Coach Guidry doesn’t think that it should be a problem the excitement and expectations that are placed upon her team.

“It’s a new season,” Guidry said. “The girls know that and as long as they remember that people aren’t going to give them anything except their best effort we should be in a good place.”

This game was also a stepping stone to a milestone for coach Guidry. This victory over St. Edmund was her 699th, all of which have been at VC.

The Lady Eagles look to get coach Guidry her 700th victory tonight as they play host to the North Vermilion Lady Patriots. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
