North Vermilion gets season underway

The 2013-2014 basketball season is getting underway tonight for the North Vermilion Lady Patriots.

After finishing last season at 22-6, the Lady Pats have some good things to build upon.

Most of that building upon is thanks in part to the large senior class.

However, with the large senior class North Vermilion Head Coach Phillip Freeman is still concerned about his team playing a complete team game.

“It’s going to have to be a total team effort,” Freeman said. “We don’t have that one or two players we can hang our hat on this year. So, if we are going to win games it is going to have to be as a team.”

Freeman went on to say that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing they have to play team ball.

It just will require everyone to trust and understand what is happening on the court.

One place Freeman isn’t concerned about is his team readiness to get back on the court.

“I actually haven’t a chance to ask them that specific question,” Freeman said. “But, because of this large group of seniors, I know they are ready to play. I know I’m anxious to get back on the floor. So, I can only imagine it’s worse for them.

Tonight marks the first game for the Lady Patriots and they will be traveling to Comeaux.

“We are not concerned about them,” Freeman said. “Only because we can’t worry about the other team right now. We have to make sure that we are where we need to be and we can’t do that if we are trying to beat the
other team. We just have to our game and whatever happens, happens.”

Freeman went on to say that of course he hopes they win but the goal for the beginning of the season is not 100 percent wins and losses.

“It’s all about getting better on the offensive and defensive side of the ball,” Freeman said. “If we can do that early on it will put us in a good place towards the end of the year, and that’s what really matters.”

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at Comeaux.

On Thursday night, later this week, the Lady Patriots will travel all the way to Vermilion Catholic to take on the Lady Eagles. That game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Pats won’t play their first home game until the Lady Pats shoot-out, Nov. 25-27.
