Lady Wildcats lose a close one

The Abbeville Lady Wildcats got back on the court Tuesday night for its first regular season action, against Carencro.

The Lady Wildcats led by six with a minute and half remaining in the game, and due to poor free throw shooting lost the game by the final of 46-45.

“We played well enough to win, we just couldn’t get it done,” Abbeville Head Basketball Coach Dean Dronet said. “We just couldn’t make our free throws. We did everything right except win the game.”

Free throw shooting was the achilles heel for the Lady Wildcats. They finished the game shooting eight of 22 from the charity stripe.

12 of those 22 shots game late in the fourth quarter when Carencro was intentionally fouling to preserve time.

“Free throws just did us in,” Dronet said. “If you are going to win close games you have to make your free throws and we didn’t. You have to give Carencro a lot of credit, but we lost that game.”

Christina Hackshaw led the way in scoring for the Lady Wildcats with 17 points. 9 of those 17 points came on three-point shots.

Bianca Levy was a close second with 13 points scored. Levy did most of her work in the second half, scoring eight of her 13.

Even though this was a tough loss for the Lady Wildcats, coach Dronet isn’t to worried about it.

“Yea we start 0-1, but it’s not the end of the world,” Dronet said. “It just gives us another chance to learn and get better as a team.”

Coach Dronet also went on to say that he made the Lady Wildcat schedule “fairly tough” for the sole purpose of getting the team ready for district play and the hopefully the playoffs.

Despite the loss coach Dronet was actually excited about getting back on the court and play games that matter.

“It is real exciting,” Dronet said. “We have a lot of goals we want to achieve and now we actually get to work towards them.”

The season will be a long season and the Lady WIldcats understand that they are going to have to play every game as hard as they can, if they want to achieve the goals they have set up at the beginning of the season.

Abbeville will travel to Lake Arthur, Friday for its second game of the season.
