Kaplan comes up short against Jennings

The Kaplan Pirates got off to a hot start, but the offense cooled down and the defense wasn’t able to sustain as the Pirates fell to Jennings by the final score of 58-43.

“We got off to a hot start,” Head Coach Jeff Davis said. “We just couldn’t keep it up. Give Jennings a lot of credit. They are a good team, and they knocked down a lot of threes, which was big for them.”

The Pirates started the game on a 7-0 run.

Jennings didn’t get its first score until the five minute mark.

Kaplan would end up scoring 20 points in the first quarter, thanks to Devante Davis, who hit a three pointer from half-court as the buzzer sounded.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Jennings was down 20-14. It took no time at all for them to catch up and take the lead.

Draylon Perkins of Jennings, on three straight possessions, hit three, three-pointers.

When the second quarter was over, Jennings had taken the lead at 31-27 because of a 17 point quarter.

The Pirates were only able to score seven points in the second quarter.

When the third quarter started, the Pirates found themselves down by six, and they closed the gap to two right out of the gate.

Unfortunately, the offense would cool down as it was only able to score six more points for the rest of the quarter, for a grand total of 10 points in the third quarter.

Jennings was able to extend its lead to nine as it scored 13 in the third.

Down by nine heading into fourth quarter, the Pirates began to press and just couldn’t seem to find a rhythm, and only scored six points in the fourth quarter.

Leading the way in scoring for the Pirates was Devante Davis.

Davis scored a team high 14 points. Along with his 14 points, Davis recorded a double-double as he brought down a team high 11 rebounds.

Kalen Rudd and Blake Touchet weren’t far behind Davis in scoring, as they both were able to score 10 points apiece.

Jalen Bates, Brady Mott and Darius Jordan rounded out the scoring with four, three and two points respectively.

The Pirates record now stands at 7-10.

Kaplan will be back in action on Friday as they will be traveling to take on Berwick, the last game before the district schedule begins for the Pirates.
