Council delays fuel contract award

The City Council drove up to the pump, but couldn’t bring itself to fill up.

Taking new bids for gasoline and diesel fuel, the city at its March meeting received two offers -- one from its current, home-town provider, and the other from a Crowley vendor.

Reed Gas and FleetRite Net both bid an index price plus 10 cents a gallon. But FleetRite included a 2-cent discount after 2,000 gallons monthly.

Based on 7,000-gallon monthly consumption that means the Crowley bid is about $1,200 a year lower than Reed.

Alderwoman Chawana Fontenot said Reed has gone the extra mile for the city during hurricanes and other emergencies and she felt it important to keep the business with a Eunice firm.

Alderman Jack Burson agreed, but was concerned about not taking the lowest bid.

As the council fidgeted, Alderman Bubba Bourque moved to send the matter to City Attorney Jacque Pucheu with instructions to decide the matter.
