Vermilion Parish Police Jury gets tough with Erath roofer about trash along the road

The Vermilion Parish Police Jury is not messing around when it comes to businesses not following the trash ordinance in the parish.

This week, police jury attorney Paul Moresi III is expected to file a complaint with the Sheriff’s Office against Glenn Romero regarding trash and debris near his home south of Erath. Moresi said Romero is violating the parish trash ordinance.

After the complaint is filed, an investigation will take place by the Sheriff’s Office to see if Romero is violating the ordinance. If he is, then a report will be filed by the Sheriff’s Office and sent to the parish’s district attorney’s office.

Mike Harson, the district attorney, will decide if charges need to be filed against Romero.

On Lamas Street, which is about a mile south of Erath, neighbors have complained to the police jury after watching three piles of roofing shingles, and other debris associated with roofing, sit on the side of the road.

Glenn Romero of Glenn Romero Roofing runs his roofing business next to his house on Lamas Street.

The police jury has an ordinance that does not allow it to pick up trash generated from a business. The owner of the business has the responsibility to bring the trash to the parish landfill or rent a dumpster to store the trash in.

The trash at Romero’s home, at one time, was in dumpsters but then it was dumped out and dumpsters were hauled away.

On Monday the police jury voted to pick up the trash and then send Romero a bill. It was not determined what the cost would be because the police jury was not sure how many yards of trash is on the side of the road.

The police jury also authorized police jury attorney Paul Moresi III file an injunctive relief against Glenn Romero for breaking the trash ordinance.

Moresi said he has tried to contact Romero by telephone and certified letters asking him to remove the trash.

The Meridional also attempted to phone Romero but his line went unanswered.
