Kaplan Pirates improve to 3-0

CHURCH POINT - The Kaplan Pirates, with its one-two running back punch, beat the Church Point Bears in impressive fashion 30-13 on Friday.
Julius Johnson and Mac Thibeaux combined to rush for 223 yards and score three touchdowns.
Johnson led the team with 30 carries for 137 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Thibeaux had 86 yards on 16 carries and scored one touchdown.
Thibeaux scored from 8 yards out in the first period and converted the two point play to make it 8-0. In the second period, Johnson had a four-yard TD run and a two point conversion run for a 16-0 half time lead.
Johnson added one more touchdown in the third period, and Rhett Menard gave Kaplan a 3-13 lead with a 6-yard run.
The No. 6 ranked Pirates improve to 3-0, which is their best start since the 2013 year when they began 3-0 and finished the year 9-4.
On Friday the Kaplan defense stepped up and held the Bears to only 104 total yards (66 rushing and 38 passing).
Kaplan had 22 first downs compared to Church Point with 5.
About the only negative stat in the game is that Kaplan had nine penalties for 75 yards.
Church Point falls to 0-3.
The three teams that Kaplan has beaten this season (Abbeville, VC and Church Point) have a combined record of 0-9.
On Friday, Kaplan opens district on the road against E.D. White, who is now 0-3. So, the Pirates’ first four opponents have yet to win a game.
It gets better. On Week 5, Kaplan entertains district foe Patterson. Three weeks into the season, Patterson is 0-3 and the odds are they are going to lose Week 4. So, if that happens, Kaplan will have to play five straight weeks against teams who have yet to win a game.
