Hurricanes blow past Abbeville

Abbeville High interim head football coach Kevin Kern is still scratching his head trying to figure out what is wrong with the Wildcats.
The Wildcats (0-4) dropped a 35-14 non-district game to the South Plaquemines Hurricanes in Abbeville.
The Class 2A Hurricanes, now 2-2, dominated the Wildcats from the opening kickoff. The first play of the game, Plaquemines ran the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown.
The Wildcats looked to have an answer as they took their opening drive and marched down to the Hurricane 19-yard-line, only to have its offense stall.
With Abbeville’s defense bending but not breaking, the Wildcat offense once against marched down field and got to the Hurricane 3-yard-line. This time, Wildcat fullback Jose Pedroza darted left and scored a minute into the second quarter.
The Wildcats missed the extra point to make it 7-6.
However, 16 seconds later, the Hurricane’s scored on a 58-yard touchdown run by their quarterback, and the blowout was on.
“Minor mistakes cost us big,” said Kern. “One example is the kick off. We gave them too big of a lane. We should not have done that.
“I expect more out of oura team. We need to stop making mental errors.”
By halftime, Abbeville was down 23-6. The Hurricanes scored two straight times, thanks to Abbeville miscues.
Plaquemines was nine yards from scoring but was stopped when Abbeville’s Kevin Williams had an interception at the Hurricane 4-yard line.
However, Abbeville would give it right back on a fumble on the 6. The next play, the Hurricanes were in the end zone at the 4:06 mark before halftime.
Abbeville would fumble again before the first half was over.
The Wildcats used five different players to carry the pigskin. Channing Spears led the team in rushing with big runs. He had 10 carries for 72 yards. Pedroza finished with 57 yards on eight carries.
AHS quarterback Demarcus Collins ran the ball 11 times for 34 yards. Braeden Williams carried it 9 times for 29 yards for AHS.
Throwing the football, Collins completed six out of 17 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Allen Arclies had three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Leading the Wildcats on defense is Montell Cormier with seven tackles, while Jakenette Bastiste had five solos.
Abbeville is at home again Friday to play North Vermilion Patriots.
