North Vermilon's Brennen Landry wins wrestling state title

Patriots finish 3rd, Kaplan was sixth

The North Vermilion Patriots finished third for the second straight year, and the Kaplan Pirates logged a sixth-place finish in the state wrestling tournament in Kenner last weekend.
North Vermilion placed seven of 12 wrestlers, and four of them were unseeded: Hogan Melebeck at 106, Cooper DeRouen at 152, Kenneth Vidallier at 145 and Alex Beraud finished second at 120.
Brennen Landry was the Patriots’ lone state champion. He edged Raekwon Thomas of DeLaSalle 8-6 in sudden victory.
Gavin Becker, the No. 1 seed at 113, lost a 9-7 decision to Brusly’s Austin Franklin in the finals.
The Pirates had six wrestlers place: Adam Gaspard at 106, T.J. Broussard finished third at 138, Trae Case earned second at 152, Jude Hebert at 160, Nigel Pascual at 170 and Julius Johnson finished second at 182.
North Vermilion totaled 150.5 points and Kaplan scored 103.5 points for the tournament.
